Mammoth Motocross 2009

The Mammoth Motocross is the longest continually run event in the US.  It began just as MX did in 1967.  I started racing up there in 1969 or 1970. I spoke with Laurey Carlson and Mike Colbert and told them about my endeavor and would they permit me to present a thanks to Dave McCoy for all of his input into the MX races and supporting all the other extreme sports that take place up on the mountain.  Not only does his mountain give skiers a world class facility , he was one of the first to embrace the snowboard revolution.   Downhill mountain biking takes over during the summer months on the mountain with both races and miles of trails for the more casual rides.  Laurey told me that no one has officially thanked Dave and that it was a great idea.

                                                Founder of Mammoth Mountain

He took his snow skiing athleticism and transferred them to MX skills.   Some of the best racing I remember back then were the epic battles between Dave and Alan Olsen.   For the first 20 years Dave put on the races out of his own pocket and it looked like the racing might be over.  The shirts called it The Finis.  It was going to be an end of an era.  Another track would have gone into history but the town and industry stepped up and the races lived on.  Another 20 years of racing and it looked like the races were definitely over.  Again stated on the shirts for sale but due to the efforts of a couple undaunted employees and the town the racing looks secure for years to come.!!!   Mammoth is the place you can count on for bringing attention to the up and coming racers as well as the stars of every era.  Thanks again from all of us for some of the best racing on the planet!!!!!

                                                                         Terry Davis

Going from TT to MX and years of aftermarket product development have brought us the now famous Terrycables and a host of suspension mods etc…  Like many of us he has seen the 4 stroke dominate to be replaced by the two stroke and then come back to life in recent years.  He is still improving anything to do with motorcycles.  His latest endeavor is building suspension for the Harley that really works.  I rode his Sportster around at the shop neighborhood and was impressed by his forks and rear shock and depressed as to how weak my old Harley suspension really is.  As a member of the AMA D37 club the Checkers he is still very fast on an MX bike!!!

                                                                                 Ty Davis

125 Supercross Champion.. Top American at the ISDE…Baja Winner.   Ty has helped many racers putting together teams under the Zip Ty banner.  Many aftermarket improvements for the MX world have evolved through his efforts.   He, like his dad, has been free with invaluable information from carburation to suspension.   Thanks !!!!

Raced a lot in the late 60’s and early 1970’s.  Eddie was also a member of the AMA D-37 # 1 club the Claimjumpers MC.  He dominated at Indian Dunes and a host of So CA tracks.  Later he got into the safety gear and apparel world by starting Answer Products.  After years of helping and sponsoring many of the world’s top racers he moved on and started 661 safety and apparel co for the extreme sports of Downhill mountain biking.   Today he is helping with his son’s endeavor with Maxxis racing products.  Eddie is also a motorcycle hall of fame member!!!

                                                                         Jeremy McGrath

Multi time National , Supercross, Supermoto , and X-Games  Champion…it could go on and on!   His first , among many, Mammoth moment for me was when he passed Rickey Johnson on the outside of the turn just before the freeway.   RJ was already on the outside and somehow Jeremy squeaked by.   He was not at Mammoth this year but when I caught up with him at a Day in the Dirt he remembered the pass  “that was cool”.  He also is a Pioneer of Freestyle MX with the Knack Knack he was at the forefront of the new era and addition to the motorcycle world.  Thanks for all you have done for our sport!!!
